School attendance and Kai for Kids

 Dear parents/caregivers.

I write to all families to ask you to get your children to school as much as possible if they are not covid positive or not household contacts.

I am aware that the fact we have cases connected with our school has made some parents and caregivers anxious.

While nothing is certain Dr Jin Russell a medical researcher from New South Wales has found that onward transmission within the school setting is very low. For every child who is infected and attends school only 3.7% of their close contacts at school subsequently tested positive. We are beginning to see that trend in New Zealand too –public health teams on the ground have seen that even though cases pop up in schools, there has been very little onward spread through the school because of the protective measures in place. This is why we remain open at Red. It’s great for a child’s wellbeing and learning to be at school with their friends and school staff, and we have very good systems in place to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Transmission of COVID-19 is still most likely to happen in your home –so please keep doing all those good things to keep your whānau safe. Wash your hands, get lots of fresh air, cover any coughs and sneezes, clean surfaces regularly, and seek advice if anyone is not feeling well. And please wear a mask when you are out and about.

Kai for Kids during Omicron:
Kai for Kids will continue to make enough lunches for all of our school children during the omicron period, meaning we need to get them out to families or have families collect them so they are not wasted during this time.

Isolating Families.
If you are a family who is positive we are organising for the Kai for Kids outfit to deliver a lunch to your house for the isolation period. Watch out for Mrs. Duffell's email.

Spare Lunches
Spare lunches will be put in the school hall entrance in the covered area from 12.15 pm where the driveway is off the street.  Anyone can grab these lunches for free.

Any leftover lunches from the hall-covered area will be available for children to grab from the gate as they leave for home.

Keep well

3 Way Conferences Canceled

 3-way conferences canceled

Morena
In light of the number of cases we now have in Canterbury and Ashburton, we are going to cancel the 3 Way Conferences to do our bit. We were hopeful we would still be free of omicron at this point.
If you really need to speak to your teacher about your child's learning you can set up a phone conference by emailing your child's teacher.

Monday the 28 February: School will be closed for instruction for teacher only day.

Tuesday the 1st March: Now a normal full school day.

Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you to those who set a conference time.

3 Way Conferences - Tuesday 1st March 1 - 7pm, Wednesday 2nd March 3.15 - 6.30pm

 3 Way Conferences:

As you know we always have three-way conferences within the first six weeks of school starting back. The rationale behind this is the teachers know the children a little by then and the early conferences assist in parents supporting teachers in getting to know their children better, as well as this being a good time to set learning goals.

This year we are having our Term 1 conferences on Tuesday 1st March and Wednesday 2nd March.

School will close for interviews at 12.30pm on Tuesday with interviews starting at 1pm, and close at the normal time of 3pm on Wednesday with interviews starting at 3.15pm on this day.

Tip For Parents

Give your child every opportunity to read to you daily. Ten minutes of reading five times a week = 50 minutes of reading time a week.

If you did this for a minimum of 35 weeks a year we have your child engaging in text for 29 hours extra every year! That 29 hours helps your child read better because they do more miles, are exposed to many words, and importantly are exposed to many ideas through the text.

It is a win - win for all concerned!
